Boycott Zoos That Keep Elephants

For generations, zoos have been promoted as places of education and conservation, leading many animal lovers to believe that visiting them helps protect wildlife. But growing scientific evidence tells a different story, especially for elephants.

Elephants are among the most intelligent, social, and emotionally complex animals on Earth. In the wild, they walk for miles every day, live in lifelong family groups, solve complex problems, form deep emotional bonds that last for decades, and grieve their dead. No zoo, regardless of its size or accreditation, can provide the space, freedom, or rich social lives these extraordinary animals need to thrive.

Instead, elephants in captivity often suffer from chronic stress, painful foot and joint disease, obesity, shortened lifespans, and severe psychological distress. Many develop zoochosis, a condition caused by the stress of captivity characterized by repetitive behaviors such as swaying, pacing, or head-bobbing. Families are frequently separated, calves are bred into captivity to replace aging populations, and elephants are denied the autonomy to make even the simplest choices about their daily lives.

Many people believe these sacrifices are necessary for conservation. In reality, zoo-born elephants are never released into the wild, and captive breeding is purely a tool to keep new generations of elephants on exhibit. Increasingly, conservationists argue that the future of elephants depends on protecting them in their natural habitats, not breeding more to spend their lives on display.

As public understanding of elephant cognition and welfare continues to grow, some zoos have begun ending their elephant programs, acknowledging that they cannot meet these animals' complex needs. Yet many facilities continue breeding elephants simply to ensure future generations remain confined for human entertainment.

Elephants are unique individuals who do not exist simply for our viewing pleasure. Our desire to see them should not outweigh their need for freedom.
